Telford, Birthplace of Industry
27 July 2025 ~ When you look at these photos of the Telford sign, you probably would never guess that I first spotted it back in the winter of 2008. Since then, more than a decade has passed (almost two in fact), and every time I drove past it, I thought to myself: I really need to take a photo of that sign. But there was one big obstacle—it is located on a motorway island by the M54, near the Priorslee roundabout, right by the centre of Telford. Physically accessing it is very difficult and frankly a bit hazardous. So, for years, the idea stayed just that, an idea. Recently, while we were visiting Telford, I pointed the sign out to Katie and said, “This time we have to do it”. But when I looked in the usual spot, it was gone. I was baffled. Just six months earlier, I remember clearly seeing it. Had it been removed? Eventually, I realised what had happened: the sign had not disappeared—it had been completely overgrown. That is why it is only visible in the autumn and winter months when the foliage dies back. This time, I came prepared. Armed with shears, gloves, and determination, I fought my way through the dense bushes, nettles, and brambles—and finally reached it. I got the photos. I was over the moon. Honestly, I cannot remember the last time I felt so happy about finding a sign. It may have taken me 17 years, but the project is finally complete. I have also put together a short video >>> Click here <<< if you would like to check it out.
