WALES: Llandecwyn and its surroundings

Written by Laszlo, 19 November 2018

The last few weeks may seem quiet around The Sign Hunters, but I can assure you all that it is just a very busy period in our lives; I am personally completing my doctoral dissertation and I focus on it pretty much all day and night. At the moment, I hardly get the chance to do other things. But there are many blog posts that I still owe you, thousands of photos that I want to share with you, so it is time for me to multitask a bit more efficiently.

Last month and approximately one year ago, Katie and I spent some great days in Llandecwyn. Katie's nan has a caravan there and we absolutely love it there. I am not sure when we are heading back again, but I can tell that we are already excitingly looking forward to it.

Llandecwyn is a hamlet between Penrhyndeudraeth and Talsarnau in Gwynedd, Wales and lies near the large estuary of River Dwyryd. The population is tiny, only a few dozen houses are located along the main road of A496, and a few more isolated houses and scattered farms can be found across the hillside towards Saint Tecwyn's Church (or known also as simply Llandecwyn Church) which lies at an altitude around 150 metres.

My photos will take you for a little walk around Llandecwyn, hike the hills and have a view over the estuary of the River Dwyryd, check out Saint Tecwyn's Church and carry on to Llyn Tecwyn Uchaf (reservoir).

There is a small island in the middle of the estuary called Ynys Gifftan which has been uninhabited since the 1960s. According to the Ordnance Survey maps, there is a footpath and access to the island which is not obvious. It said that it can be reached on foot at low tide which we tried but were not successful. It is one of my greatest plans for me to do one day - I just want to stand there on the top of that 38-meter-high pile of rocks and wave at the world. One day, we will succeed! For now, enjoy a mixture of photos I have taken during the times we spent there.
